Migrants and refugees in the city
In 2015, the number of international migrants has exceeded 250 million people. Among these migrants, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that 65.3 million have been forced to migrate for various reasons, including 21.3 million refugees and 40.8 million internally displaced. More than the half of the refugees is coming from Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia, countries affected by conflicts, while the main host countries are Turkey, Pakistan and Lebanon. Lebanon hosts for example 1.2 million refugees, 20% of its total population. Furthermore, Asia is the continent most affected by internal displacements, caused mainly by climate disasters. The IDMC (The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre) has recorded 16.3 million of internal displacements in Asia for the year 2015. These massive and sudden arrivals constitute a specific urban situation. Indeed, the brutal exodus led to the quick installation of large populations in limited spaces.
Can the urban specialists’ approaches contribute to better managing the arrivals of displaced persons? What can the urban professionals teach us about the experience of the “temporary cities” and the consequences of mass arrivals in existing cities?
These issues will be discussed at the « AdP – Villes en développement » annual Day.
